Code Generation

Code generation determines how patient and address codes are created within QuickEMR. A code for a patient or address contact is simply a unique way to identify that particular record in the database and lists that appear in the program.

How these codes are generated depends on the settings of this screen. In the example below, a code is generated by taking the first 4 characters of the person's last name, followed by a 4 digit sequential number, and finally the "Code" of the facility where the patient is being seen. The reason for the sequential number is so that if you have 3 patients with the last name of "Smith", the first patient will get "SMIT0001", the next "SMIT0002" and so on.

You may use 1, 2, or all 3 of the lines on the left to choose how codes are generated. Optionally, codes can be entered manually on the screens where patients and addresses are added. Keep in mind, however, that all codes entered must be unique!

To test how codes will look, choose the options on the left, enter information in the Test Area, and click the Show Generated Code button.
